The Vancouver Police Department is trying to help B.C. native pop-sensation Carly Rae Jepsen find a man accused of hacking into her computer. The accused hacker found naked photographs of Ms. Jepsen, according to gossip website TMZ, and attempted to sell them to the media.
“The investigation is moving to a phase where we will likely be laying charges,” said VPD spokesperson Constable Lindsey Houghton.
Ms. Jepsen’s staff contacted the VPD in mid-March and asked them to investigate claims that someone hacked into her computer, he said. The VPD launched an investigation into the unauthorized use of a computer, theft of telecommunications and the criminal harassment of Ms. Jepsen, he said.
A male suspect from outside Vancouver has been identified, he said, but police have not yet arrested him. Police do not know if the suspect is known to Ms. Jepsen.
Even though the suspect is not from Vancouver, the city’s police investigated because the computer that was hacked was in Vancouver, said Constable Houghton.
“It’s different for cyber type crimes,” he said. “The offence takes place or can be deemed to take place where the computer resides.”
This is the second nude image scandal Ms. Jepsen is currently involved in, after someone leaked a sex tape supposedly starring the pop-star.
Ms. Jepsen denied the accusation Monday in a tweet: “Crazy morning. Discovered that someone put up a sex tape claiming to be me. Ridiculous. Obviously not me.”
