A Vancouver man has been charged in the alleged assault of a staff member at a B.C. politician's office.

Spencer Chandra Herbert, a New Democrat who represents Vancouver West-End in the provincial legislature, alleged last week that a man came into his constituency office shouting homophobic slurs and complaining about a rainbow flag hanging from his office.

Mr. Herbert alleged the man attacked his assistant and punched a hole in the door before leaving.

A 53-year-old man was arrested and now police say they have laid charges of assault and mischief under $5,000.

Police say the man is expected to appear in court next month.

His identity has not been released.
