A man has died while in the custody of Transit Police in Metro Vancouver.

A release from the department says the 41-year-old Surrey man was arrested late Thursday night at the Surrey Central bus loop, while he was aboard a Coast Mountain bus.

Transit Police officers say they determined the man was acting irrationally and apprehended him under the Mental Health Act, before taking him to hospital.

The man was described as compliant during the arrest, and police say there was no incident but that he was in medical distress by the time he reached the hospital and could not be revived.

Transit Police informed the Independent Investigations Office, which handles cases of death or serious injury involving police forces in B.C., but the IIO declined to take the case so the matter has been forwarded to Surrey RCMP for investigation.

The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner has been informed and is monitoring the case.
