Nanaimo residents will be able to enjoy the cool waters of two popular swimming holes for at least the rest of the summer.

Nanaimo council has unanimously voted to abandon plans for the immediate removal of the two aging dams in Colliery Dam Park, in the city's south end.

Instead, council says it will work to minimize short-term risks while building a fund to pay for any future upgrades.

Council had ordered removal of the century-old dams, but ran into angry opposition and will now work with local groups and First Nations to decide the next steps for the future of the structures.
