An emu that has been on the lam since escaping from a Nanaimo, B.C., farm on Sunday has been captured.

Owner Tim Genner says Lucy, a male, was cornered at the Vancouver Island University campus on Friday afternoon.

Genner says Lucy seemed a bit spooked when he tried to load her in his van, but he is thrilled the animal is safe.

The nearly two-metre tall, 70-kilogram bird left Genner's farm on Sunday and, according to his owner, made a beeline for downtown Nanaimo.

Though flightless, emus can travel 60 kilometres an hour and Genner had warned others not to try and catch Lucy.

The animal was discovered to be male long after he was named.
