Mountain bike trail at Whistler Blackcomb.Handout

Find out what gravity and a pair of wheels can do as you go hurtling down hundreds of metres of stunning mountain trails at Whistler's Mountain Bike Park, which opens this weekend.

This year, riders can also brave the Top of the World Trail, a lift-accessed, single-track trail that starts at the very peak of Whistler and descends more than 1,000 feet – and increases the park's total vertical to nearly 5,000 feet, making it the highest of its kind on the continent.

"It's just an incredible place," says business development VP Rob McSkimming about the alpine trail, which offers bike-stopping views, including Black Tusk and Cheakamus Lake. "And then the actual riding itself is fantastic."

Because there's still plenty of snow in the alpine, diehards will have to wait until mid-July to try the new peak trail; with the ski hill still open, however, they can bike and board on the same day – but only until May 28.

"There aren't many places in the world where you can make that happen," Mr. McSkimming says, "so it's a pretty great way to spend a long weekend."

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is open until Oct. 8. Beginner, intermediate and advanced trails available. For more info, visit whistlerblackcomb.com.
