Vancouver’s reputation as a visual effects and animation centre has received a boost with the announcement Friday that Sony Pictures Imageworks will expand its Vancouver operation. The Oscar-winning ( Spider-Man 2) visual effects and digital character animation company is opening a second office in Vancouver, a 1485 square metre space in Yaletown, two blocks from the office it opened in Vancouver in 2010.
The company will use the additional space for work on the current productions Men in Black 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, Oz the Great and Powerful and Hotel Transylvania.
“Vancouver today is a vibrant digital production [centre]that offers a strong talent base and significant government incentives vital to our ability to deliver exceptional quality and value to our clients,” said Sony Pictures Imageworks executive vice president and general manager Randy Lake, in a press release.
Pixar Canada ( Cars, Toy Story) opened an office in Vancouver’s Gastown in 2010 and Digital Domain ( Tron: Legacy, Real Steel) also has an operation in the city.
