A Surrey man who pleaded guilty to the gruesome murder of his wife at a newspaper office two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

Manmeet Singh, 28, will not be eligible for parole for 16 years. He was sentenced Friday at B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

Ravinder Bhangu, 24, died on July 28, 2011, after Mr. Singh attacked her with a hatchet and a knife at the Sach Di Awaaz newspaper office in Surrey, where she worked as an administrative assistant and translator.

Friends of Ms. Bhangu described her as quiet and well-liked. The couple had marital issues and Ms. Bhangu had moved in with her aunt a few months before the attack, they said.

Mr. Singh was charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder earlier this month.
