Nature: J.B. MacKinnon, independent journalist and award-winning author of The 100-Mile Diet, will give a talk about his new book, In The Once and Future World, at UBC on Thursday evening. In the book, Mr. MacKinnon outlines how nature once was, how it is today, and how it could be brought back. "We are now living in a 10 per cent world," he writes, "a planet with just one-tenth of its former abundance. … To reverse our damaging course, we need to remember, reconnect, and rewild: to remember nature as it was, reconnect to it as something meaningful in our lives, and begin to remake a wilder world."

Thursday, Oct. 3, 7:30pm, Frederic Wood Theatre at UBC (6354 Crescent Road, UBC), $21, writersfest.bc.ca

Wayzgoose: According to the Alcuin Society, Wayzgoose was a goose dinner prepared by a young printer at the end of his apprenticeship. Later, it was the party a printing house would hold at the end of summer, before the printers went back to working by candlelight. Today, this centuries-old tradition has become a time when printers and book artists come together to exhibit their work to the public. This year, the Wayzgoose Fine Press Printing Show is at the Vancouver Public Library. Equal parts book fair and art exhibition, it will have everything from tables and booths of beautifully crafted books to hand-printed broadsheets and curious ephemera. If you are besotted by typography and the beauty of the printed word, this is a show worth checking out.

Saturday, Oct., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m,| VPL, Alice MacKay Room, free, alcuinsociety.com

More Books: This is a good weekend for bibliophiles. Not only is Wayzgoose on, but The Vancouver Art/Book Fair takes place as well. Pop down to the Vancouver Art Gallery Annex to check out artist-produced books, magazines and other printed ephemera. The art/book fair takes place in the same two-week period as several similar events around the world (New York, Tokyo, Berlin) and aims to put Vancouver artists on an international stage by showcasing their work within the context of this global conversation about books. This show will feature small runs of locally published chapbooks and magazines (with more than 50 exhibitors) and readings, panels, performances and installations.

Oct. 5 and 6, Vancouver Art Gallery Annex (750 Hornby St.), vancouverartbookfair.com

Farms To Forks: The awesome food event staged inside The Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts sees some of the city's best chefs paired with the region's best growers and producers for a night of hors d'oeuvres, local wine and beer pairings (and the odd cocktail). Guests are invited to cruise from one classroom kitchen to the next to sample food and watch great chefs at work. All proceeds go to support Growing Chefs, an organization dedicated to teaching kids that they can grow their own dinner – even in the city.

Sunday, Oct. 6, Doors 5:30 p.m., Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (1505 W 2nd Ave. ), $149, growingchefs.ca

Eco Fashion Week: Catch the latest from local designers strutting their wares down runways and across stages to demonstrate how fashion and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. Highlights include the Value Village 68 Pound Challenge (in which a designer searches the aisles of Value Village to find 68 pounds of used clothing – the amount of clothing the average North American ditches every year – to rework into a collection), the Nicole Bridger You Are Not Alone show, in which male models will wear women's clothing to help the audience think about their perception of beauty, and the 10-Year Anniversary show by local designers Twigg & Hottie. There will also be numerous eco-fashion inspired speaker seminars and industry panels. Oct. 6-10, Various times, Robson Square (800 Robson St.), ecofashion-week.com
