A woman has died after falling from an apartment highrise on the edge of Vancouver's Yaletown district, and police are investigating the incident as a suspicious death.

The woman, in her 20s, fell at about 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon from 13th floor apartment in the 1400 block of Howe Street, on the North side of False Creek, between the Burrard and Granville Street bridges.

Rescuers raced to the scene after witnesses reported hearing screams and seeing the woman fall from a balcony.

Paramedics were unable to revive her.

Major crimes investigators and the forensic identification unit remained at the scene until late Sunday night.

The victim's name has not been released and police are appealing for any other witnesses, saying they aren't sure what she was doing on the balcony in the seconds before she fell.
