Cheer on some of the world’s best women’s soccer players as they vie for top honours at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying final at BC Place – then go for gold at this year’s Olympic Games in London.
Teams, including Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Haiti, Canada and the U.S., have gone toe to toe, and at press time, Canadian midfielder Sophie Schmidt was gearing up for the big Friday night semi-final against Mexico that would decide who moves onto the finals and lands the coveted Olympic berth.
“The tournament has been fantastic,” she says. “We have won all three games, scored lots of goals, and it’s just such a joy to play for Canada in front of a home crowd.”
Ms. Schmidt, who played for Canada at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, has also been thrilled with all the attention the event has garnered – but the real excitement comes when she steps on the field.
“It’s just the little things that make you smile – a hard tackle or a beautiful goal,” she says. “I just think soccer is the best game in the world.”
The CONCACAF Women’s Final is Sunday at 5 p.m. (ticketmaster.ca).
