A young male giraffe died unexpectedly at the Greater Vancouver Zoo Monday morning.

Amryn, a three-year-old from the Rothschild subspecies, was found lying on the ground inside the barn and treated, the zoo said. He died shortly afterwards.

The animal has been examined by the zoo's veterinarian and a pathologist performed an autopsy, but the results are still being processed and the zoo does not yet know what caused the death.

"Results from the post-mortem of Amryn will be announced as soon as they are completed," said veterinarian Bruce Burton in a prepared statement.

Amryn was due to mark his fourth birthday on Dec. 20. His parents, Eleah and Jafari, also live at the zoo. Giraffes can live for more than 20 years.
