It was just after 6 p.m. and an 83-year-old man was sitting on a bench at a Surrey, B.C., bus stop.
There were two others with him on Thursday, on 128th Street at 72nd Avenue, a busy area surrounded by businesses and houses. Then, they heard a roar.
Witnesses saw a yellow car - they think a Corvette - shoot by.
Right behind it came another car, a black Corvette that clipped a Honda.
It lost control and skidded off the road and over the curb.
"We heard the roar of the engine, the screech of tires, and the boom-boom as the car collided with a number of obstacles there on the side," witness Rauvan Sidhu told CTV.
The black car struck the bench where the three people sat, ripping the bench's bolts from the concrete sidewalk.
The 83-year-old was hit, nearly losing his legs.
"The collision was so bad that he was literally knocked out of his shoes," witness Akkbar Obaidi told the network.
"Both of his legs were detached and in a sense just hanging from a few strands of flesh."
Police Friday were careful not to say "street racing," but are investigating witness reports that both cars, which were apparently Corvettes, were driving alongside one another.
They're looking at whether speed was a factor.
The victim remained in hospital Friday night, while the 25-year-old driver of the black Corvette was being questioned by police.
Both are from Surrey.
The driver of the yellow car didn't stop and hasn't been found.
"The yellow vehicle did not stop. The black Corvette was reportedly travelling beside this vehicle. Police are looking at speed as a contributing factor in the collision," RCMP said in a statement.
