RCMP are investigating what they are calling the brutal beating of a man who tried to stop a group of men from harassing a homeless person.

Witnesses say the group of five men severely beat the man early Sunday morning outside of a bar in Red Deer, Alta., and kicked him in the head several times.

The man was treated in hospital for a concussion, multiple bruises and cuts that required stitches.

Police say he has been released from hospital and is expected to recover fully from his injuries.

The homeless man was not injured.

RCMP are seeking more witnesses to the attack.
