Tall ship crew ends search for Gainey

Halifax— Canadian Press

A tall ship has called off its search for a crewmember who was swept overboard in the North Atlantic late last week.

Capt. Daniel Moreland of the Picton Castle says the crew is grief-stricken by the loss of Laura Gainey.

He says the crew tried for more than 80 hours to find Ms. Gainey, who was swept overboard by a wave Friday night.

Ms. Gainey is the 25-year-old daughter of Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey.

The Picton Castle continued to the search even after American officials called it off last night.

Moreland says the Picton Castle will sail toward safer, calmer waters to the south and let the crew rest and grieve.
