Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett says he's been given the task of conducting a core review of spending and services for the newly elected Liberal government.

Bennett says such a review hasn't been undertaken since the Liberals first came to power in 2001.

He says it will be an exhaustive review of all government ministries and Crown corporations to ensure taxpayer dollars are being spent in the most effective way possible.

The last core review 12 years ago took a year, but the Kootenay East MLA says he hopes this time around it can be achieved more quickly.

Bennett says he expects the process will uncover money that could be spent more wisely.

Such a review was a campaign promise by Premier Christy Clark.
