Fire crews are investigating whether a body in the rubble left by a Bathurst Street fire over the weekend is that of a woman whom police credited with saving everyone else inside.
The body was discovered around 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon as fire crews combed through what was left of a store at 1079 Bathurst St., Toronto Fire Captain David Eckerman said. The scene was handed over to police and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal, who will identify the body.
A day earlier, Toronto police announced that a 50-year-old woman, Marie Speck, had been missing since helping alert people to the fire early Saturday morning. "All occupants are safe, due to Marie Speck's actions," police said at the time.
