Crown prosecutors have decided no charges will be laid against a Vancouver police officer who shot and killed a man who attacked officers with a bicycle chain more than two years ago.
Paul Boyd, who was bi-polar and had gone off his medication, was killed in August of 2007 after police responded to a call of an assault at a bus stop in the area of Granville and Broadway.
Shortly after police arrived, Mr. Boyd started fighting with the officers, swinging the bike chain and using his fists.
The Crown report on the incident says the officers fought back with fists and batons but eventually one officer shot Boyd eight times as he continued to attack the police and ignore their commands.
After considering the evidence of the officers involved and civilian witnesses, prosecutors decided the officer who fired the shots acted reasonably and in accordance with his training.
The report says there's not enough evidence to support the view that the officer used excessive force under the circumstances.
