A Burnaby man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of 54-year old Sher Singh in 2009.
At around 9 p.m. of March 1, Mr. Singh was talking with former colleagues when he noticed a man shoplifting.
Mr. Singh grabbed him by the arm but was struck in the head and fell to the ground unconscious.
“He knew the people that worked there and didn't want to see the store ripped off,” said Corporal Dale Carr, spokesman for the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team
After regaining consciousness, Mr. Singh went home with a family member and was monitored throughout the night and into the day.
Family members found him dead that afternoon.
An autopsy ordered by the coroner's office showed that Mr. Singh died from a fatal injury to the head consistent with a blow to the head.
Faris Omerovic, 19, made his first appearance in court on Thursday and will appear again tomorrow.
