Striking paramedics who halted a security exercise for the 2010 Olympics for several hours, ended their picket earlier today, moments after a court issued an injunction prohibiting their activity.
“We’ve achieved our objectives,” union executive member Mike Binns told about 20 paramedics as he called an end to the picket. “I hope the provincial government now listens.”
“All we are asking is for the government to go back to the bargaining table and treat us fairly. Don’t bring in draconian legislation that is not going to solve the problem,” he said.
The appeal to the court to intervene came after the security exercise was relocated in response to the refusal of unionized firefighters to cross the paramedics' picket line.
The exercise was moved to an industrial site adjacent to the initial location, Vancouver's VIA RAIL rain station.
However the paramedics also moved their picket to the new location.
