Cobbling together a home
Tuesday, May. 22, 2012 8:25PM EDT
The MudGirls are an all-woman collective who build natural structures using materials such as straw-bale, driftwood adobe, cordwood and recycled items, such as car tires. The women have been hired for such projects as homes, cabins, outhouses and cob-ovens.People gathered from various parts of Canada and as far Vermont for this year’s MudGirls workshop. The 15 participants, led by MudGirls Molly Murphy and Sheera Cipilinski, spent May 7 to 12 on the construction of a cob house on Saltspring Island. The workshop consisted of learning various natural building techniques that included making the cob, building walls and installing windows. The participants applied the techniques as the days progressed and the structure started to take shape.Ms. Murphy has been living in a cob house on Saltspring since 2009, sharing it with her husband and two children. The house looks more like a work of art than a shelter. Many of the materials came from the environment around her home – and she used recycled tires as roof shingles.

Homalco First Nation elder creates wood carvings
Tuesday, May. 01, 2012 10:39PM EDT
Bill Blaney, 70, an elder with the Homalco First Nation in Campbell River, spent his life cutting down forests as a logger, and then cutting grass as a groundskeeper. But it was not until 10 years ago, when he retired, that he started cutting wood as an artist. For Mr. Blaney, the extra cash was just a bonus to his real goal – an attempt to bring back culture to his community at a time when native carving skills are slowly disappearing. Globe and Mail staff photographer John Lehmann spent the evening with Mr. Blaney in the carving shack behind his house.

Pop goes the world: Scenes from the Eurovision finals
Thursday, May. 24, 2012 5:22PM EDT
Now in its 57th year, the Eurovision Song Contest is an epic battle of plastic pop, pitting performances from 42 nations against one another for the honour of crafting the continent’s favourite song. Musically, it's a global laughingstock (that's part of the charm), but for host countries, the event can serve as a valuable PR platform
