The RCMP has confirmed that at least one Canadian was involved in January's hostage taking at a gas plant in Algeria, while refusing to state whether the deceased was among the victims or the perpetrators of the act.
"The RCMP confirms that Canadian human remains have been identified in Algeria," said RCMP spokeswoman Julie Gagnon.
The RCMP refused to add details to the situation, stating that it is still working on the case involving the storming of the In Amenas facility in Algeria on Jan. 16.
"As this is an ongoing investigation, no further information will be given at this time," she said.
There have been tensions between Ottawa and Algiers in recent weeks, but a federal official added on Monday that the Algerian government has been "very helpful throughout this process."
Last January, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said two Canadians were among those who took the hostages. Commandos raided the plant to end the standoff and at least 38 hostages died.
Algiers did not publicly release proof of its claim of a Canadian involvement in the matter.
