It's Earth Day today and dozens of events are planned across Canada to mark the event.

They include an Earth Day fair in St. John's, NL, a tree planting day in Windsor, Ont. and a parade in Vancouver.

Organizers of Earth Day events say more than six-million Canadians take part in events and projects every year to improve their local environments.

They add that Canadians have transformed Earth Day into Earth Week and Earth Month to accommodate all the events being planned.

Many communities held events last week while others are planning events this week.

Earth Day was launched in the U.S. on April 22, 1970 to raise awareness about environmental issues.
