No longer able to compete with flashy multiplexes, the Carlton Cinemas will close early next month after Cineplex Entertainment decided not to renew its lease on the space.

The theatre will close after final showings on Dec. 6, said Pat Marshall, Cineplex's vice-president of communications. She cited its age and declining profitability as factors in the decision.

Formerly the grand, 2,300-seat Odeon Toronto, the theatre was opened in 1948 and rebuilt as a multiplex 30 years later. It shows mostly independent and limited-release films.
