Jean Paul II (1920-2005): The first non-Italian pope in nearly 500 years, the Polish born priest, survived the German occupation, worked as a labourer to finance his education, supported religious freedom during the Soviet era and publicly endorsed the Solidarity movement. As Pope--he was elected in 1978 and reigned for more than 26 years-- he was theologically conservative and an outspoken foe of political oppression. Warm and energetic, he travelled to more than 120 countries, reaching out to embrace Catholics and non-Catholics with peace and piety.
