Guelph General Hospital is reporting its third death of a patient with C. difficile in less than two weeks.

The hospital says an elderly patient with the bacteria died late last week.

It's the hospital's fifth C. difficile death since the first cases were discovered in May.

Another new hospital-acquired case was also confirmed Monday.

The hospital is currently treating five cases.

Spokeswoman Suzanne Bone says the hospital continues to employ extra rigorous cleaning measures in all rooms after patients are discharged.

At least 26 deaths have also been linked to the infectious bacteria in the Niagara region.
