Fire has gutted a Greek Orthodox church in east-end Montreal.

The fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m. in the Koimisis Tis Theotokou Church just a few blocks west of Uniprix Stadium at the site of the old Jarry Park.

Montreal fire department chief of operations Richard Bourdeau says the church, built in 1962, appears to be a total loss.

The church pastor was in the facility when the fire began but was not injured.

There was no indication as to what caused the fire.
