The son of former Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin has been granted day parole after serving six months in jail for a drunk-driving stunt that killed his friend.
Lawyer Norm Boxall says the application for day parole for Jack Tobin was heard and granted today.
Mr. Boxall says the day parole will start when space becomes available at a yet-to-be-determined community resource centre.
A judge sentenced Mr. Tobin to three years in prison and a seven-year driving ban last year for his role in the death of a close friend on Christmas Eve 2010.
Mr. Tobin, 25, pleaded guilty in May to impaired driving causing death.
Alex Zolpis was pinned under a pickup truck during drunken hi-jinks in a downtown parking lot.
At a sentencing hearing, Mr. Tobin offered a tearful apology for his actions.
