One man is in custody after three people were injured following an attack at a Fredericton college involving a machete-style knife, police said Monday.
Officers responding to the attack at Eastern College found three victims – two teachers and a student – injured, Fredericton police Chief Leanne Fitch told a news conference.
Fitch said a student had the man subdued on the floor of a hallway when police arrived shortly before 8:30 a.m.
“This was an isolated incident at Eastern College and we do not believe there are any additional threats to the community at this time,” Fitch said.
She said the three victims were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, but none of those were life-threatening.
She said the suspect also had minor injuries and was being treated in hospital.
The vice-president of operations at Eastern College said the school is shocked and saddened by the incident and counsellors were brought in Monday.
“We are grateful to the staff and students who reacted quickly and effectively in response to this emergency,” Debra Johns said in a statement.
“Their actions minimized the potential outcome of this unfortunate event.”
