Don Dunphy is shown in a frame grab from a 2011 CBC interview. Dunphy was shot and killed on Sunday April 5, 2015 in his home in Mitchells Brook, Newfroundland.

A funeral is being held today for a man who was shot by a police officer in Newfoundland.

The private service for Don Dunphy is in Mount Carmel, about 80 kilometres southwest of St. John's.

Close to 100 people gathered outside his home last night for a vigil for Dunphy and his family.

The 59-year-old was shot Sunday by an unnamed Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer who is also on the premier's security team.

Police say the officer was investigating perceived threats against provincial politicians on Twitter.

The RCMP have said the officer reported he was invited in, but that Dunphy aimed a rifle at him about 15 minutes into the visit.

The Mounties say the officer then shot Dunphy with his service revolver.

The RCMP is investigating the shooting, while a retired provincial Supreme Court judge has been hired to oversee the investigation.
