Halifax police have charged a 35-year-old man after reports of someone dressed in fatigues and carrying at least one long gun on a city trail.

A man was arrested after multiple police units were called Tuesday to the Clayton Park and Fairview areas.

Police say the situation created fear in the community and tied up considerable resources.

Officers say they seized weapons that looked like assault rifles but were actually airsoft guns.

Jason Keith Gillespie of Halifax faces charges of possession of weapons dangerous to the public peace and mischief.

A city bylaw prohibits people from using or being in possession of air guns in a municipal park or on a trail.
