Alfred Apps, the key legal adviser to Ontario's embattled air ambulance service, is resigning from Fasken Martineau after 23 years at the firm.
Mr. Apps said in an e-mail response to The Globe and Mail on Friday that his departure has nothing to do with the problems at Ornge.
"It has been in the works for months," he said. "We just concluded our fiscal year end at Faskens. So it was time to do it."
Mr. Apps is joining the law firm of Wildeboer Dellelce, one he helped found and where his brother, Eric, also practises.
Mr. Apps did much of the legal work for former Ornge CEO Chris Mazza in setting up for-profit entities. Fasken Martineau is owed $440,000 by an Ornge for-profit entity that is now in bankruptcy, according to documents.
Fasken Martineau will continue to act for Ornge. However, it is not clear for how much longer. Ornge spokeswoman Jennifer Tracey said the air ambulance service is in the process of seeking competitive bids for its legal work.
