The shooting deaths of three New Brunswick RCMP officers Wednesday night is among the worst multiple-murder shootings of police in Canada, according data from the Officer Down Memorial page shared by Canada.com.

Before Moncton, the most recent multiple-shooting incident was in 2006 in Spiritwood, Sask.

A March 2005 shooting in Mayerthorpe, Alta., which took the lives of four RCMP officers, was the worst multiple-police shooting in Canada's history. Along with a 1962 incident in B.C., the three deaths in Moncton are the second worst.

All three of Canada's worst incidents were committed against RCMP officers.

There have been two other multiple-police deaths in New Brunswick. One of those was in Moncton in 1974, when two local police officers were kidnapped and subsequently killed after making a traffic stop.

The other incident took place in 1978, when two RCMP officers were shot and killed while investigating a domestic disturbance in Hoyt, N.B.

There have been 19 incidents with multiple-death police shootings in Canada's history.
