Mounties had to escort a Manitoba junior B hockey team and their families from an arena after a game turned violent, APTN reports.

The Norway House Northstars met the Thompson Miners last weekend and witnesses say the game quickly turned into an ugly racial incident.

The teams are part of the Keystone Junior Hockey League, formerly known as the Manitoba Junior B Hockey League, and have players as young as 15.

Witnesses say a Norway House player was slashed in the head during play, breaking his helmet, while another player from the same team was assaulted by two adult men and a woman who yelled racial slurs at the player.

The player's mother told APTN that her son had a blooded lip as he left the rink.

Officials stopped the game with eight minutes left in the second period.
