The Canadian Red Cross has been collecting donations for people trying to recover from flood damage to their properties in southwestern New Brunswick.

The agency says in a news release that it equipped and helped manage shelters or comfort stations in Fredericton, Oromocto, Burtts Corner, St. George and Bonny River over the weekend.

The agency and other volunteer groups have been asking for donations of cash to assist people hit by the flooding of the past week.

Meanwhile, volunteers are cleaning houses and pumping out floodwater from homes in Bonny River and St. George, two communities hit by the heavy rainfall.

Jacques Cote, a community preparedness officer with the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization, said that three teams of government officials have been touring the St. George, St. Stephen and Keswick Ridge areas to see if homes damaged by the floods are safe to inhabit.

"We're in the recovery stage now," he said. "People are cleaning, and we're trying to fix the roads so they're passable."

New Brunswick was battered by days of heavy rains and wind that flooded many areas in the south of the province. The storm came just days after the community of Charlo, on the province's north shore was hit with storm surges.

Much of the flood water has receded, although the Emergency Measures Organization said some areas of the St. John River below Fredericton would continue to have high water through the weekend.

Meetings were held Sunday evening to inform residents on how to apply for disaster relief assistance.
