Television networks will be in court on Friday in a bid to televise the upcoming inquest into the death of a man who died while waiting in a hospital emergency room in Winnipeg.
Brian Sinclair, a 45-year-old homeless double amputee, died during a 34-hour wait at a Winnipeg emergency room in 2008.
Networks including CBC, CTV, Global and APTN will argue that the public has a right to see the proceedings by having them televised or streamed directly on the Internet.
Their bid to open the courtroom to cameras is supported by Sinclair's family who say justice must be "seen to be done."
But the province and the nurse's union will oppose the motion, arguing that having cameras present could influence the behaviour of witnesses.
The province will argue that having cameras in the courtroom could set a bad precedent for future inquests and deter some witnesses from coming forward to testify.
