Two Newfoundland fishermen who abandoned their boat last night are reported to be in good condition after they were plucked from a life-raft by a rescue helicopter.

The Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules aircraft were sent to the Parson's Pond area off western Newfoundland around 9 p.m.

The rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax says it had received a distress call from the Atlantic Endeavour.

The boat had run aground about 30 kilometres north of Gros Morne National Park.

The two men aboard were in a life-raft tethered to the boat when the helicopter arrived from Gander.

The men were hoisted to safety just after midnight local time amid three-metre swells.

The boat later sank.
