Provincial police say a nine-year-old boy is dead after being pulled from a snowbank in a community northwest of Orangeville.

Const. Paul Nancekivell says police responded to the incident at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Township of Amaranth in Dufferin County.

He says the boy was found in the snowbank but said reports that it was a snow fort that had collapsed are unfounded.

The boy was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Nancekivell says the boy's mother was on the scene and was taken to the hospital by police to be with her son.

He says police are still investigating the incident and do not want to speculate about what the boy was doing in the snowbank.
