Police say one man is dead while four Northern Ontario communities are under a state of emergency after flash flooding hit the area.
Emergency Management Ontario says Johnson Township, Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional (Echo Bay) Township, the Municipality of Huron Shores and Plummer Additional Township have all declared emergencies.
It says up to 100 millimetres of rain came down in the span of just a few hours overnight in communities east of Sault Ste. Marie, triggering major flooding and road washouts.
EMO says Highways 17 and 638 are among the main roads affected by flooding.
Provincial police say a 57-year-old man died Tuesday morning in Plummer Additional Township when his motorcycle crashed on a washed-out road.
They say all roads in the township have been closed.
Police say two people managed to climb up an embankment after suffering non-life-threatening injuries when their vehicle was swept into a sinkhole north of Sault Ste. Marie.
Emergency Management Ontario says infrastructure in the four northern communities is being assessed for damage.
