The Nova Scotia government is raising the bar on its renewable energy targets.
The government says the province will strive to get 40 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
The province had previously said it wanted to get at least 25 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2015, which the NDP government says it will now enshrine in legislation.
The government says to reach its goal will require about $1.5-billion in investment from various sources and new transmission lines to New Brunswick.
The government estimates it will cost an additional $10 to $20 a year for the average consumer of electricity between now and 2015 to reach its 25 per cent goal.
The province says the target for 2020 is the most aggressive in Canada.
