Ontario’s education minister says the government failed to follow up on 25 complaints against unlicensed daycares in the last year-and-a-half.
They include four of five complaints made against the daycare where a two-year-old girl died last month.
Education Minister Liz Sandals says the ministry has applied for an injunction against the Yellowood Circle provider north of Toronto, which would prevent them from operating a daycare in the province.
She says 448 complaints were lodged with the ministry between Jan. 1, 2012 and July 12, 2013.
Officials are supposed to follow up with a visit to the daycare within five business days.
Ms. Sandals says the ministry has investigated all the unanswered complaints “thoroughly” and has confirmed that all the daycare providers are complying with the law.
