Shamy Saint-Jean, 19, is the object of a warrant by Quebec correctional services for escaping from lawful custody, and another warrant by the provincial police for identity fraud.

Police in Quebec are looking for a man who they allege escaped from pretrial custody by passing himself off as his brother.

Shamy Saint-Jean, 19, was held at the Rivière-des-Prairies detention centre in Montreal at the same time as his 24-year-old brother, Edgar, According to the Sûreté du Québec, the brother was supposed to be released in the evening of Jan. 27.

Instead, the police force said in a communiqué, it was Shamy who showed up and walked out of the provincial holding centre.

According to court records, Shamy, a Montreal resident, was in detention after being charged with assault, assault with weapon, robbery, conspiracy and using a firearm to commit an offence.

He is now the object of a warrant by the Quebec correctional services for escaping from lawful custody, and another warrant by the provincial police, for identity fraud.

He is described as a black man, 6-foot-1, weighing 82 kilograms, with black hair and brown eyes.

According to Le Journal de Montréal, details of the escape emerged last week at the Montreal courthouse when the Crown had to cancel Shamy's upcoming preliminary hearing and issue arrest warrants for him.

The court heard that Shamy presented himself before correctional agents who expected to release Edgar, and was able to answer questions about Edgar's address, mother's name and birth date.
