RCMP in the hamlet of Igloolik, Nunavut, have shot and killed a man in his home.

Officers in the local detachment were called to a home on Tuesday evening.

They say the adult male in the house advanced on them wielding a weapon and uttering threats, and an RCMP officer opened fire.

One officer received non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation.

The man who was shot was taken to the local health centre but died of his injuries.

The Major Crimes Unit from Iqaluit has been called in and an independent police service will be asked to investigate.
