Several environmental organizations are calling for a public referendum on the proposed Jumbo Glacier ski resort in southeastern B.C.
The $450-million project would feature up to 20 lifts and 45,000 hotel beds and would be built in the Purcell Range west of Invermere.
The referendum call is from the Jumbo Creek Conservation Society, the Valhalla Wilderness Society, the Nelson Eco Society and others.
Jumbo opponent Dave Quinn said 90 per cent of people who took part in the provincial government's environmental assessment on the resort at public meetings in Nelson and Invermere were opposed to the project.
But Liberal MLA Bill Bennett rejected that claim and said the referendum call is a last-ditch effort to stop the development. CP
