A 22-year-old Quebec man is dead, and another is facing charges after a late-night road stunt went wrong.

Police say a group of young men decided to put a couch on a sleigh, hitch the sleigh to a van and go for a ride along a country road in the community of St. Benjamin, about 325 kilometres east of Montreal.

The victim was riding on the couch, which suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic, and was hit by an oncoming car.

No one else was hurt.

The 21-year-old man who was driving the van reportedly fled the scene of the accident, but was soon tracked down and taken into custody.

He faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, and leaving the scene of an accident.
