More than four weeks after the mysterious disappearance of a teen-aged newcomer to Toronto, police will today widen their appeal for help, with presentations at two schools close to where her backpack was discovered last week.

Mariam Makhniashvili, 17, was last seen Sept. 14, outside the crowded front entrance of Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, a short walk from her family's rented apartment.

Her backpack, with school books inside, was found last Thursday behind an apartment building in the Yonge and Eglinton area, about two kilometres away.

Since then, officers have been canvassing the neighbourhood door to door and putting up posters.

Today, detectives will issue appeals to students at Northern Secondary School and at nearby North Toronto Collegiate.
