A sperm whale carcass that sat on the shore in Cape St. George, Nfld., has floated awayMichael Fenwick/The Canadian Press

The carcass of a sperm whale that a Newfoundland town had tried to sell on eBay has been washed out to sea.

A combination of strong winds and a high tide refloated the remains late Saturday near Cape St. George.

Mayor Peter Fenwick said the 12-metre carcass was last seen floating away in an easterly direction.

Last week, the town listed the beached carcass on the online auction site, saying it just wanted someone to take away the rotting carcass.

But eBay officials pulled the ad, saying it violated policies regarding the sale of animal parts.
