Torrential rain that flooded roads and bridges across the Maritimes is slowly moving out of the region on Thursday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Jeremy March says although the biggest punch packed by the weather system has passed, rain continues to fall in eastern Nova Scotia as well across eastern and northern New Brunswick and most of Prince Edward Island.

March says as of 2 a.m. on Thursday parts of central and western Nova Scotia had received over 100 millimetres of rain while the Grand Manan Island area of southern New Brunswick was drenched by nearly 160 millimetres, and 120 millimetres fell in parts of western PEI.

He says rain is falling in the Bathurst, N.B., area, which had been hit with 60 centimetres of snow March says the rain resulted in the closure of roads around Moncton and the flood risk to many areas across the Maritimes remains high because water levels will continue to peak throughout the day.

RCMP in western PEI reported as many as 60 roads flooded by late Wednesday.
