Police in Los Angeles are investigating an apparent homicide at a home rented by George Stroumboulopoulos. The man found dead at the scene, 41-year-old Canadian actor Richard Hong, was a close friend of the long-time CBC personality and former Hockey Night in Canada host.
At 2:17 a.m. on Friday morning, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a burglary call at the 6,700 block of Milner Road, in the Hollywood Heights neighbourhood. "Officers were directed to a male who was apparently a victim of a homicide," a spokesperson told The Globe and Mail.
"The victim was a dear friend of mine, who was staying at my place while I was away. I am heartbroken," Mr. Stroumboulopoulos said in a statement posted to Twitter on Friday evening.
Witnesses reported seeing a man "fleeing the area," the police spokesperson said, and homicide detectives from the department's West Bureau are "trying to find the suspect who did this."
In his statement, Mr. Stroumboulopoulos said, "I only have a few details but it seems like it was the result of a break-in," adding, "I will have more to say when we know more about what happened." He was in New York on Friday, but flew to Los Angeles to be with friends, and could not immediately be reached for comment.
Since he was replaced as host of Canada's flagship hockey broadcast in June, Mr. Stroumboulopoulos has spent some of his time at his Toronto home recording live music performances from his living room, dubbed The Strombo Show Sessions, which he broadcasts on his YouTube channel.
