Grinches stole a Christmas tree that was destined for a Saskatchewan church.

Mounties say the thieves broke into part of a service station in Southey, a town about 60 kilometres north of Regina.

The thieves broke in over the lunch hour Thursday, when some staff had taken their breaks.

Police say more than one person broke into a locked compound attached to the south side of the building.

RCMP say the compound was well-stocked with Christmas trees, and some had been specifically set aside for businesses and local non-profit groups.

The thieves took a tree that was more than two metres high that had been set aside for the Lutheran church — and nothing else.

Police say the culprits got away undetected in an unknown vehicle.
